ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: SHEY MONASTERY

Built in 1655 under the command of the then king of Leh, DeldamNamgyal, Shey Monastery lies within the main complex of Shey Palace. Situated on the Leh-Manali route; around 15km from the city limits, this sacred monastery in Ladakh is the home to the largest golden stature of Lord Buddha.

The inner walls of the monastery are adorned with delicate, yet detailed murals, frescos and sculptures of the lord. Shey Monastery also houses the second largest statue of Shakyamuni Buddha that is thinly covered with a layer of gold. Other remarkable artefacts in Shey Monastery includes 16 ‘Arhats’ (local word for saints who have achieved Nirvana), statue of Lord Buddha’s disciples, images of Shambunath, and different postures of Lord Buddha.
