FESTIVAL IN LADAKH – SAKA DAWA FESTIVAL

One of the most sacred festivals in Ladakh, Saka Dawa Festival is celebrated in the fourth month of Tibetan calendar. According to the legends, the three most important happenings of Lord Buddha’s life – birth, enlightenment and parinirvana, occurred on the full moon day of this month.

To commemorate these holy happenings, the locals of Ladakh celebrates the Saka Dawa Festival by performing several dharma practices. They recite mantra, meditates, offer mandals, takes precepts, and refrain themselves from killing animals or consuming meats to honour Sakyamuni.

During the Saka Dawa Festival, the locals also changes the Tarboche Flag located towards the south of Kailash Kora Mountain to mark the auspiciousness of this holy festival. They also turn their prayer wheels and pray for their well-beings and prosperity throughout the year.
