ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: LAMAYURU MONASTERY

The Lamayuru Monastery or the ‘Place of Freedom’ is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh. Situated around 127km from the heart of Leh, this pious monastery belongs to the Red-Hat sect of Buddhism and is a home to around 150 monks.

According to the legends, Lamayuru Monastery was founded in the 11th century by MadasiddhacharyaNaropa, and the location of the monastery was predicted by Bodhisattva Madhyantak. It is also said the Ladakhi King built the buildings and later donated them to the monastery and also exempted them from any taxes. The king also declared the area as a ‘no-arrest zone’, and thus it gained popularity as the ‘Place of Freedom’ among all the other religious places and monasteries in Ladakh.
