ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: MATHO MONASTERY
A 16th century monastery, Matho Monastery in Ladakh is located only 20km from Leh city, and was founded by Lama DugpaDorje. Being the only Buddhist monastery that follows Saskya order, it is almost a replica of the profound Sasko Monastery located in Tibet.
A hidden away monastery in Leh Ladakh, Matho is known for its annual Oracle festival called MatoNagran that is held on the 25th and 26th day of second month in Tibetan calendar. During this festival, lamas within the monastery selects two oracles or ‘Rongzam’. The monastery also houses a museum that showcases the diverse traditions and Tibetan cultures followed by the Saskya order Buddhists.
