FESTIVAL IN LADAKH – LOSAR FESTIVAL

Ladakh welcomes the New Year with all its devotion, spirituality, faith, and cheerfulness. With the advent of this festive time, the region celebrates the Losar Festival with all its vigour and spirit.

Celebrated on the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar, Losar begins with the lamas performing a special puja for their local deities and thus marking for the festival’s preparation.

The locals visit the graveyards to pray for the eternal peace of their deceased ancestors. Following this, they meet their friends and relatives, exchange gifts, and revel in huge feasts till the fifteenth day. Preparing ‘guthuk’ (local noodle) is among the most exciting customs during Losar Festival in Ladakh. Locals also exchange traditional dough balls that contains some hidden elements. They believe, these hidden elements reveal a lot about each other’s characters.

Celebration continues for around 15 days with the last day being the most festive day of Losar Festival. On this day, the monasteries are decorated in the most captivating ways, lamas recite the prayers cultural artists perform their traditional dance; the entire of these fifteen days is a true riot of colours in Ladakh.
